Display your creativity and imagination in a family-friendly, county-wide competition. N.C. Cooperative Extension in Currituck County will be hosting a Hay Bale Decorating contest in conjunction with the Fall Family Fun: An Online Fair Event.

This hay bale decorating contest will have two divisions: Currituck County History and Heritage and Celebrate 4-H, with youth and adult categories in both divisions. Individuals/Families may submit one entry in each division. Submissions will be compiled and released on the Fall Family Fun website so that fairgoers can vote for their favorites. Participants who submit entries in the Celebrate 4-H Division have the option of having their entries submitted in the State 4-H Hale Bale Contest. Prizes (TBD) will be awarded to the winner of each category in both divisions.

To enter, sign up for the Fall Family Fun: An Online Fair Event at https://currituckfallfair.eventbrite.com. Once registered, fill out the form for the Hay Bale Decorating contest in which you are participating and upload your photo(s). Entries will be accepted until October 31, 2020, at 5 p.m.

Competition Divisions/Categories

Currituck County History & Heritage: Bales should be designed to reflect and promote life in Currituck, past or present. We have a rich and diverse history, so there are plenty of areas to choose from for your display. Suggested ideas include but are not limited to: agriculture and farming, wild horse sanctuary, fishing, Whalehead, the lighthouse, beach life, the old courthouse, hunting, and wildlife.

Categories:

  • Individual 8-13
  • Individual 14-18
  • Individual 19 and up
  • Family: two or more members of the same household regardless of age

Currituck County History & Heritage Form

Celebrate 4-H: Bales should be designed to celebrate and promote NC 4-H. Suggested ideas include but not limited to: 4-H Project areas (STEM, service, Outdoor and/or Healthy Living, Culinary Arts, Communications, Livestock etc.), 4-H Grows Here, 4-H’s (Head, Heart, Hands, Health), NC Regions, 4-H Districts and the Clover.

Categories:

  • Individual: 8-13
  • Individual: 14-18
  • Family: two or more members of the same household regardless of age

Celebrate 4-H Entry Form

Guidelines for Participation 

  • Participants may submit one entry (either individual or family) in each division.
  • Rectangular hay bales should be used.
  • Limit your decoration to two (2) – eight (8) bales.
  • Each entry should have a slogan communicating the aspect of the theme displayed.
  • Entries will be judged on eye appeal, use of materials, creativity, and theme interpretation.
  • Hay bales should be decorated with a good clean wholesome nature. No vulgar or suggestive decorations will be allowed.
  • No commercial or political party signs of any kind are allowed.
  • Youth participants must be enrolled in 4HOnline.
