The leaf spot advisory is often thought of as a tool that can help peanut farmers avoid spraying when the pathogens are not active. In some cases, a farmer can obtain the same level of protection from leaf spot with fewer sprays by using the advisory compared with bi-weekly sprays when pathogens are not active during periods of time during the growing season. The leaf spot advisory can also help farmers make timely sprays when they think pathogens are not active because rain is not frequent and conditions seem dry. Several years ago we ran into a weather pattern where it seemed like pathogens were not active because rain was limited, and it was assumed that pathogens were not active. However, even though this seemed to be the case, dew points were high enough that the pathogens causing leaf spot disease were active. Some growers decided not to spray, when in fact they needed to spray, creating a situation where epidemics were able to begin relatively early in the window where we need protection from this disease. We need to try hard not to miss a gap in protection from leaf spot. The leaf spot advisory not only helps us know when not to spray, but it also helps know when to spray.
