Question:

Will Valencia peanuts grow here? What are the concerns about them for NC?

Jordan:

They will grow here but yields are lower than runner or virginia market types. I don’t know that we had the most recent Valencia varieties, but on page 43 of 2023 Peanut Information we present data on yield. A higher premium is indeed needed to make a profit. Valencia market types will be less expensive to grow. Likely little gypsum is needed and seeding rates in pounds per acre will be lower. Need 6 plants per foot of row. Disease control expense will be lower because these mature much earlier. But we don’t know exactly how a variety developed for the southwest will perform here in terms of all of our diseases. They have no dormancy. If it gets wet and stays wet in September they will sprout in the hull. That will be ugly.
