Preparing for Hurricane Season: Food Safety

Hurricanes and storms can cause power outages and lead to food safety concerns. With hurricane season approaching, consider ways to start protecting your food and family by being prepared. From a food safety lens, consider these 4 ways to prepare for a hurricane;
  • Purchase or locate thermometers. It's important to have thermometers accessible in your refrigerator and freezer as well as a digital thermometer to check the temperature of foods.
  • Check the items in the refrigerator. In the days leading up to a potential hurricane, purchase or prepare foods that won't require refrigeration. Choose foods that can be eaten cold or heated on an outdoor grill if available.
  • Store or purchase water. Water systems can be impacted during a storm. Be prepared in case of a boil water advisory. Use bottled/clean water for cooking, brushing teeth, cleaning, water for pets, etc.
  • Prepare coolers. Dry ice, purchasing ice, or freezing containers of water are all ways to extend the time food can be kept below 41°F.
