Duplin county home food preservation series

The N.C. Cooperative Extension, Duplin County Center has two upcoming hands-on canning workshops. Both workshops will be held at the Cooperative Extension office located at 165 Agriculture Dr, Kenansville, NC 28439.

Totally new to canning? Don’t worry. We will provide an introduction to canning during these workshops. If you’ve been canning a while, you might be surprised at some recommended changes over the years.

Boiling Water Canning Workshop

When: April 20th, 10 a.m.
Description: Interested in preserving your own or locally grown foods for shelf-stability? There is more to canning than putting foods into a jar. Join us to learn the associated risks, science behind preventing the risk, recipe terms, and a hands-on workshop. This workshop will focus on using a boiling water canner to process jars of jams and other acidic foods for shelf-stability. Rachel will walk you through how to safely can high-acid foods as we can a food item together! Class size is limited due to the hands-on nature of the workshop and is on a first-come first-serve basis.
Registration Fee: $15

Pressure Canning Workshop 

When: April 27th, 10 a.m.
Description: Join us at the Duplin County Extension office kitchen to learn about basic canning procedures, how to prevent food safety risks and food spoilage when canning, where to find safe recipes, and the science behind making a shelf-stable product through a presentation and hands-on workshop. Rachel will walk you through how to safely can a low-acid food as we pressure can a food item together! We’ll also explain how to use a pressure canner to process jars of vegetables and meats for shelf stability. Class size is limited due to the hands-on nature of the workshop and is on a first-come first-serve basis.
